    Take 1–2 capsules daily. PQQ is water soluble, meaning it can be taken with or without food. Some suggest PQQ is optimally absorbed when taken on an empty stomach.

    Everything You Need To Know About PQQ

    Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) is a naturally occuring compound found in small amounts in foods such as dark chocolate, green tea and fermented foods such as miso. However, it is naturally produced by bacteria as it is used for it’s survival and growth.

    PQQ is what is known as a “redox cofactor” in that is accepts electrons transforming into PQQH and donates them to molecules that need them.

    PQQ works to increase energy by promoting the formation of new mitochondria, the power houses of the cell. It does this by activating proteins such as c-AMP and PGC-1 Alpha. These molecules work to increase the activity of so called ‘longevity molecules’ including SIRT1. These molecules then activate Tfam, a protein that increases mitochondria by attaching to DNA, allowing for existing mitochondria to be copied and produced.

    In the brain PQQ is able to increase the production of nerve growth factor (NGF), a molecule that is important for both the growth and maintenance of brain cells. While the exact mechanism is not fully understood research suggests that PQQ might enhance the activity of COX enzymes. This leads to an increase in signalling molecules called prostaglandins. Higher levels of Prostaglandins are associated with increased levels of NGF and consequently improve cognitive function.

    PQQ also works in the body as an antioxidant and is thought to be 100 more powerful than vitamin c. PQQ works as a direct antioxidant, helping to lower levels of harmful molecules called reactive oxygen species, protecting cells from the damage caused by high levels of oxygen. PQQ also increases the production of the body’s own antioxidant enzymes such as SOD and Catalase. These molecules are produced by cells and work in a similar way to PQQ, helping to further regulate levels of oxidative stress.
