It has also been shown to interact with certain drugs that aim to control elevated blood pressure. Berberine may also interact with certain immunosuppressive drugs, such as Cyclosporine. Berberine should also not be combined with any pharmaceutical that helps to control sugar.     Everything You Need To Know About Berberine

    Berberine has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years worldwide to treat gastrointestinal issues, infections, and metabolic conditions. More recently, it has been studied for its potential blood sugar-regulating benefits and positive effects on the gut microbiome.

    Berberine has poor bioavailability on its own. According to this study combining berberine with milk thistle may improve its absorption. Therefore, we’ve included milk thistle to potentially maximise berberine’s bioavailability.

    Berberine is thought to work primarily by activating AMPK, an enzyme involved in energy regulation known as the ‘metabolic master switch.’

    AMPK acts as an energy sensor in cells. It is naturally activated when cellular energy is low or in high demand, such as through fasting and high-intensity exercise. Once activated, it encourages the cells to uptake glucose (sugar) from the blood, where it can then be converted into energy. It does this by activating insulin receptors, proteins on the cell surface that bind to insulin, a hormone controlling blood glucose levels.

    When insulin binds to its receptors on cells, it triggers a series of events that allow glucose to be absorbed into cells for energy. Berberine has been studied for its ability to promote the translocation of GLUT4 (Glucose Transporter Type 4) to the cell surface, enhancing the movement of glucose from the blood into muscle and fat cells.

    Berberine also positively impacts the gut microbiome by promoting beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus while inhibiting harmful strains, including certain strains of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria. This is partly due to Berberine’s antimicrobial properties, which suppress unwanted bacteria and create a balanced microbiome. As an antioxidant, Berberine may also reduce gut inflammation, improving the gut lining and supporting the growth of beneficial bacteria.

    Healthy insulin sensitivity allows cells to absorb glucose more effectively, keeping blood sugar levels stable. Over time, factors such as high-sugar diets and sedentary lifestyles lead to insulin resistance, where cells fail to respond correctly to insulin, leading to an accumulation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), harmful compounds that accumulate during high blood sugar levels, causing inflammation. Chronic high blood sugar levels also place stress on the beta cells of the pancreas, which produce insulin. Over time, this stress can result in beta cell exhaustion, reducing their ability to produce sufficient insulin. Additionally, inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance further impair beta cell function.

    Insulin resistance and impaired insulin production are precursors to type 2 diabetes and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. AMPK activation has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity by promoting glucose uptake into cells and enhancing insulin receptor activity. This leads to more efficient glucose use, lowering blood sugar levels and improving the body’s response to insulin.

    Chronic high blood sugar and the accumulation of AGEs are linked to age-related decline. AMPK activation is associated with enhanced autophagy, improved insulin sensitivity, and better metabolic health, all of which support healthy ageing. Berberine has been studied for its ability to activate AMPK, helping reduce oxidative stress, inflammation, and cholesterol—factors that influence lifespan and health in later years.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    In several studies, Berberine has shown effects comparable to Metformin in regulating blood sugar, though they work in different ways.

    Berberine works by activating AMPK, an energy-sensing enzyme naturally triggered when cellular energy is low. AMPK promotes glucose absorption from the blood into cells for energy, partly by moving glucose transporter proteins to the cell surface.

    Metformin, a biguanide drug, primarily reduces glucose production in the liver.

    If you are taking Metformin, we encourage you to consult your doctor before making any changes.

    Berberine is best taken with each main meal throughout the day for healthy weight and blood sugar management. If you are planning to take it to help you improve the results of a fast, then taking 1000 mg with your last meal of the day is recommended.

    Berberine hydrochloride is the most commonly available form of supplemental berberine; unfortunately, it has poor availability. This can be improved with the addition of milk thistle extract. Each capsule of Advanced Berberine contains 500 mg capsule of berberine HCL with 125 mg of milk thistle extract for an effective dosage and to ensure optimal bioavailability.

    Studies have indicated that berberine supplementation may be helpful for several gut-related conditions, including the infection Candida.

    How to claim the guarantee

    Return shipping costs: You'll need to arrange and pay for return shipping unless the product arrived faulty or damaged. All returns are sent to our UK return address. If you're ordering from outside the UK, please keep in mind that international return shipping can be expensive.

    Multiple bottles or larger quantities: If you buy multiple bottles or a larger quantity of the same product in a single order, the guarantee covers the use of one bottle, or the smallest individual size supplied. Any additional unopened units must be returned to receive a refund.
