    Everything You Need To Know About GlyNAC

    GlyNAC is a combination of glycine and N-acetylcysteine (NAC), two amino acid precursors required for the production of glutathione, the body’s most powerful antioxidant. Glutathione plays an essential role in protecting cells from oxidative stress and helping detoxify the body.

    GlyNAC is converted to glutathione through a series of biochemical steps involving its two components, glycine and N-acetylcysteine (NAC), plus glutamate, which is typically highly present in cells.

    Once glutathione is formed, it functions by neutralising reactive oxygen species (ROS), harmful molecules generated as byproducts of normal biological processes and environmental stressors. It does this through a process called a redox reaction. It donates an electron to unstable ROS, stabilising them and converting harmful ROS into water or other less harmful molecules. In addition to its antioxidant role, glutathione is crucial for detoxification. Glutathione binds to toxins in the liver and helps convert them into water-soluble forms, making them easier for the body to eliminate.

    Healthy glutathione levels are essential for neutralising reactive oxygen species (ROS) and maintaining cellular health. However, with age, stress, or disease, glutathione levels decline, making the body more vulnerable to oxidative stress and toxin buildup, which leads to cellular damage.

    The liver relies on glutathione for detoxification, particularly during Phase II. This is where glutathione binds to harmful substances like heavy metals and pesticides, making them water-soluble for safe elimination. Declines in glutathione impair detoxification, contributing to toxin accumulation, oxidative stress, and inflammation.

    As we age, glutathione levels decline due to reduced availability of its precursors, increased demand, depleting reserves, and less efficient recycling. GlyNAC may protect cells from oxidative damage by boosting glutathione, which supports cellular health and enhances detoxification. Studies suggest that higher glutathione levels are linked to greater longevity and a lower risk of age-related diseases.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    As NAC is an organic compound containing sulphur, GlyNAC will have an odour. This is completely normal.

    NAC is taken to support the body’s production of the anti-oxidant Glutathione. However, the amino acid Glycine is also required to produce this antioxidant, and it is often deficient in the diet. Combining these two amino acids gives the body the building blocks it needs for optimal glutathione production.

    The answer depends. Some people have genetic issues that prevent them from making optimal amounts of glutathione in which case a reduced glutathione supplement may be the better option. However many people experience significant side effects from supplemental glutathione. In this case, GlyNAC supplementation along with other anti-oxidants such as Vitamin E and Selenium is recommended.

    GlyNAC has been used in studies at doses as high as 7.2 grams a day; however, this was done in a controlled setting and for a short period of time. Dosages of 1.4 to 2.1 grams (2-3 capsules) have a better safety record and are also less likely to result in side effects. To assess your tolerance, we suggest starting with one capsule a day and working up from there.

    Whilst uncommon, side effects of GlyNAC include nausea, fatigue, upset stomach, and headache. If you experience side effects while taking GlyNAC, we suggest that you lower your dosage.
