    Resveratrol is a type of plant compound or polyphenol, which is present in greater than 70 species of plants, particularly skin and seeds of grapes, and also in a subtle amount in red wine and several other foods. It is a type of phytoalexin, which acts against various pathogens including fungi and bacteria. As a natural ingredient of food, it has been demonstrated by numerous studies that Resveratrol is a potent antioxidant.33 Hence, it helps in protecting your body from oxidative damage that may make you more prone to diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.

    By exhibiting anticancer activity it may help in the treatment and prevention of several kinds of cancer. The anticancer properties of Resveratrol have been proved by many in vivo and in vitro studies and they show that it can inhibit all stages of carcinogenesis (such as initiation, progression, and promotion). It also shows other beneficial effects such as anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, neuroprotective, and vasorelaxant effects.33

    Some of the foods that are rich sources of Resveratrol are purple and red grapes, wine, peanuts, apples, plums, and some berries (blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, mulberries, and lingonberries).1, 2

    Resveratrol is mostly concentrated in the seeds and skin of berries and grapes. During the preparation of red wine, the seeds and skin of grapes are fermented; hence, Resveratrol is present in high concentration in red wine.3

    Drinking red wine in moderate amounts has been touted as beneficial for the health of your heart. Resveratrol present in red wine is the key ingredient that helps in preventing blood vessel damage, reducing the levels of LDL cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein) or the bad cholesterol and preventing blood clots. According to some research, Resveratrol may reduce your risk of blood clotting and inflammation both of which may also lead to cardiovascular disease.4

    Most of the clinical research related to Resveratrol has either been done in test tubes or animals and using a high quantity of the compound.5 The research on humans is limited and has been done using Resveratrol supplements, in which it is present in concentrations higher in comparison to those that you may get by way of food.1

    The health benefits of Resveratrol

    1. Supplements of Resveratrol may help reduce blood pressure: As Resveratrol has antioxidant properties, it may help in reducing blood pressure.6 According to a review published in the journal ‘Clinical Nutrition’ high doses of the compound may help in reducing the systolic blood pressure.7 The systolic blood pressure tends to rise with age due to stiffening and hardening of arteries. High systolic pressure makes you prone to cardiovascular disease. Resveratrol may lower your blood pressure by producing an increased amount of nitric oxide that relaxes the blood vessels.8, 9
    2. It may positively affect the blood fats: According to various animal studies, supplements of Resveratrol may produce a healthy change in the blood fats. In an animal study published in the journal ‘Life Sciences,’ it was found that consuming Resveratrol supplements reduced average body weight and total cholesterol of the mice and increased their blood levels of HDL (good) cholesterol.10 Resveratrol works by reducing the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. Oxidation of LDL can contribute to a buildup of plaque in the arterial walls. In another study, grape extract boosted with Resveratrol supplements was given to study participants. It was found that after six months, the LDL levels in the participants reduced by 4.5 percent in comparison to subjects who took a placebo.11
    3. It may protect the brain: It has been suggested by several studies that consuming red wine may help in slowing down cognitive-decline related to age. This may occur partly due to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of Resveratrol present in red wine. It may interfere with beta-amyloid, the protein fragment that is crucial in the formation of plaques, which are the main characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease. Furthermore, it may also trigger a chain of reactions that help in preventing brain cell damage.12, 13, 14, 15, 16
    4. It may help raise insulin sensitivity: Resveratrol may provide various benefits for diabetics such as preventing complications of diabetes and raising insulin sensitivity. Due to its antioxidant properties, it may help in protecting you from oxidative stress that leads to various diabetic complications. It may also help in reducing inflammation that is a vital contributor to various chronic diseases such as diabetes. It helps in activating AMPK, a protein, which helps your body in metabolizing glucose; thereby, lowering the levels of blood sugar.17, 18, 19, 20
    5. It may help relieve joint pain: Breakdown of cartilage may cause pain in the joints that is among the major symptoms of arthritis.21 Resveratrol supplements may help in the prevention of deterioration of joint cartilage.21, 22 In one study, Resveratrol was injected in the knee joints of study animals (rabbits) that had arthritis and it was demonstrated that these animals had less cartilage damage.22

It may help suppress the growth of cancer cells: Resveratrol has been found particularly in test tubes and animal studies to combat several types of cancer cells such as colon, skin, prostate, breast, and gastric. It may do so by inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, by changing gene expression, and by interfering with the expression of certain hormones.23, 24, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31
